Get to know world: Die Kiew-Revolution in 360°-Virtual-Reality - Interview mit Mikus Opelts

Get to know world: Die Kiew-Revolution in 360°-Virtual-Reality - Interview mit Mikus Opelts

Aus diesem Grund haben sie "Get to know world" ins Leben gerufen.

Wir brauchen also eindeutige Grenzen: Was sollte man in VR machen, was eher nicht.

When and why did you have the idea to make a VR-experience out of the Kiev Revolution setting?

More than a year ago, when the revolution in Kiev took place, I had a strong feeling that Europe’s history was about to change, so with no other reason, I just went there to document what had happened. In order to create a virtual tour so in years to come people can go back in time and experience it. But VR is the best experience technology, so it was no brainier to make this project.

Do you think that VR as a media can provide emotional experiences that regular videos can’t?

100% Yes. Videos, photos with traditional multimedia are a distance solution that allows us to view content. VR takes us beyond the screen and we enter the environment, which opens up our senses and the emotional boundary is incomparable.

Do you believe that you have to be even more careful crossing lines in VR (say with violence, explicit content) than compared to video, because it's so close to the viewer?

After first time I tried Oculus Rift I went home and watched movies, The Surrogates, Matrix and Hear. For me it was clear that this technology can destroy our real lives and have us wanting just the virtual world. So I see a clear boundary of where I want to go with this opportunity and where we don't need it.

Did you bother with these questions when crafting your concept?

Yes, for this reason we started gettoknowworld.com, a world exploration platform that allows us to understand, experience and learn about the world around us. The first part of content is countries and cities, we are in the process of adapting Iceland, New York, Paris and 20 others.

Which technology did you use to produce the videos?

We created a virtual 360º photo tour. For the past 5 years, my business Giraffe360, has been creating virtual tours and we have completed 700 projects, so VR is a new environment that perfectly fits our product and vision and to be frank, because of our skill and experience it’s quite easy to get it done.

Which are your key-learnings regarding storytelling/technical production and the current limits of VR technology from the Kiev production?

We have to interact with the whole body (except the legs), with Oculus rift we use Leap Motion for navigation with your hands, but we have to use them much more. The environment should be more interactive, because it’s not just about viewing a place with VR in 360º, it’s all about exploring it.

There were several attempts in the past for bringing VR to the mass market - why will it succeed this time?

3 years ago I bought lot of VR headsets that were on the market to try them with our virtual tours, but I didn't get what I wanted. The first time I tried Oculus Rift I understood that was it! Now, basic hardware technologies are advanced enough to build a new level content and communication that really elevates our senses.

Any new projects in the pipeline?

gettoknowworld.com is our playground project we are doing just for fun and to test technologies, but we are taking it quite seriously, so we are launching new places to explore starting from May. Every 2 weeks we will post a new county, city or magnificent place that everyone can find out more about.

Personally, what is your favorite VR-experience so far?

That’s yet to come.
